Hello

At Island Moves we're all about creating warm, welcoming spaces where you can feel free to express yourself, to move, to dance, to explore, make new friendships and feel fitter and healthier than you do right now.

With so many commitments and obligations piling up everyday it might feel like connecting to your body, to your self, to your spirit is a bit of a luxury. An indulgence even. But the truth is, that unless we take care of ourselves we can't really do what needs to be done in taking care of others. Taking care of ourselves means more than looking after our bodies, eating well, resting well and exercising in a functional way. It means really nurturing our spirit, being inspired by life, having fun, laughing and connecting with others.

But I can't dance! Dance is really just a fancy word for moving. Each of us can dance and move in our own way. There is no 'right' way to do it. There is no one 'better' than you. We are all different, and that difference is something to be celebrated, not concerned about.

We offer two styles of class. Both are barefoot, easily modified and one hour long. Both leave you feeling energised, uplifted and like you've moved your whole body. I'll explain here the main differences as best I can, but really, the best way to find out what the classes are like is to find out for yourself by trying them.

The Nia Technique This is a cardio group fitness class that can be modified for all levels of fitness and mobility while retaining all of the pleasure, fun and benefits. There are 52 moves within Nia - that might sound like a lot - but after a few weeks of coming to class you'll begin to get so familiar with them and the different patters that you won't have to 'think' so much. The majority of the class is choreographed to a varied and eclectic playlist with the teacher at the front. We end on the floor with gentle stretching and relaxation.

The GROOVE Method Karen is the first GROOVE Facilitator in Scotland, and these classes are more like dancing with your friends on a night out than exercising. The magic in them lies in the amazing workout you achieve plus they are so much fun. For each song there will be one or two very simple basic moves - like a step & a clap, for example. Everyone unites together in this move and we take it from there. The music is brilliant and really helps you get in the mood, with some beautiful stretching and stillness at the end so you can leave energised and uplifted for the rest of the day.

I look forward to dancing with you soon!

Love, Karen
